Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies
Interdisciplinary Studies
Your Interests. Your Education. Your Future.
Why Follow One Path When You Can Create Your Own?
Not everyone knows exactly what they want to do after college, and that's okay! In the Hutchins School of Liberal Studies, we believe your education should reflect who you are, what interests you, and where you want to go.
The Interdisciplinary Studies program gives you the flexibility to design a personalized Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies that combines your academic interests with your career goals.
Whether you're interested in business, psychology, education, social justice, the arts, or exploring several fields, Hutchins allows you to connect your passions and create an educational experience that's uniquely yours.
What Makes Interdisciplinary Studies Different?
Design a Degree Around Your Interests.
Why limit yourself to studying just one subject?
In Hutchins, you'll work with faculty to develop an individualized Area of Emphasis that reflects your interests, strengths, and future goals.
Within the 40 units required for the major, you'll have opportunities to explore subjects that matter to you while building a strong foundation in critical thinking, communication, research, and problem-solving.
Your education should fit your goals, not the other way around.
Small Classes. Big Ideas. Real Connections.
In Hutchins, learning happens through small, discussion-based seminars where your voice matters.
Instead of traditional lectures and exams, you'll explore ideas, ask questions, exchange perspectives, and develop a deeper understanding of the world around you.
You'll build relationships with professors and classmates while strengthening the communication and collaboration skills employers value.
Take Your Learning Beyond the Classroom.
Your college experience should include more than textbooks and assignments.
Interdisciplinary Studies students have opportunities to personalize their education through:
- Internships: Gain hands-on experience and explore potential career interests.
- Independent Study: Work closely with faculty to investigate topics you're passionate about.
- Study Abroad and Study Away: Expand your perspective while earning academic credit through approved programs.
- Elective Seminars and Workshops: Explore new subjects, develop skills, and connect ideas across disciplines.
- Courses in Other Majors: Broaden your education by incorporating coursework from other academic fields.
Students may include up to 12 units from approved study abroad programs as part of their Area of Emphasis.
Students are also encouraged to consider adding a minor in another field to complement their Liberal Studies degree.
One Degree. Many Career Possibilities.
Not every career requires a degree in one specific subject. Some careers need people who can think creatively, communicate clearly, adapt to change, and solve problems.
That's where an interdisciplinary education can make a difference.
Hutchins graduates have pursued opportunities in a wide variety of fields, including:
- Business and Human Resources
- Law and Public Policy
- Social Work and Counseling
- Journalism and Communications
- Arts and Nonprofit Administration
- Education Administration

- Teaching and Higher Education
Some of these careers require additional education, credentials, or professional training, but a Liberal Studies degree can provide a valuable foundation for future opportunities.
