The Liberal Studies – Ukiah Degree Completion Program offers a pathway for eligible transfer students to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from Sonoma State University while remaining close to home.
Whether you're balancing a full-time job, raising a family, or returning to college after several years, having a clear academic plan can help you move forward with confidence.

How Does the Two-Year Plan Work?
This sample academic plan is designed for students who:
- Enter Sonoma State University with 70 transferable lower-division semester units.
- Have completed the required lower-division General Education transfer pattern.
- Are admitted to the Liberal Studies – Ukiah Degree Completion Program.
- Plan to complete their remaining bachelor's degree requirements through approved coursework.
A Sonoma State University bachelor's degree generally requires a minimum of 120 semester units, including applicable major, upper-division, General Education, and university graduation requirements.

Year 1: Junior Year
Build on Your Experience. Explore New Ideas.
During your first year in the Liberal Studies – Ukiah Program, you'll begin upper-division coursework designed to strengthen your communication, analytical thinking, and interdisciplinary knowledge.
You'll explore subjects across the humanities, social sciences, and other academic fields while making progress toward your major and graduation requirements.
Suggested Coursework — Minimum 25 Units
Courses identified in the program's sample planning materials include:
- LIBS 302 — Introduction to Liberal Studies
- LIBS 321A — Upper-Division Liberal Studies Seminar
- LIBS 321B — Upper-Division Liberal Studies Seminar
- Additional approved Liberal Studies and General Education coursework
Fall Semester
Work with your advisor to select courses that satisfy your major requirements and fit your schedule.
Spring Semester
Continue upper-division coursework while reviewing your remaining degree requirements and planning for your final year.
Your Goal: Complete approximately 25 units toward your degree while building a strong foundation for your senior year.
Year 2: Senior Year
You're Getting Closer. Let's Finish Strong.
Your senior year brings you closer to completing your bachelor's degree and preparing for your next opportunity.
You'll continue exploring interdisciplinary subjects, strengthen your academic skills, and complete remaining program and graduation requirements.
Suggested Coursework — Minimum 25 Units
Courses identified in the program's sample planning materials include:
- LIBS 304 — Liberal Studies Coursework
- LIBS 308 — Liberal Studies Coursework
- LIBS 321C — Upper-Division Liberal Studies Seminar
- LIBS 321D — Upper-Division Liberal Studies Seminar
- LIBS 402 — Senior Synthesis
- Additional approved major, General Education, or elective coursework
Fall Semester
Continue completing your major requirements, upper-division General Education courses, and any remaining electives.
Spring Semester
Complete your remaining degree requirements, including Senior Synthesis when appropriate, and prepare for graduation.
Your Goal: Complete your remaining coursework and reach the required units for your bachelor's degree.
Important Graduation Requirements
Know What You Need Before You Register.
Every student's academic history is different. Your advisor can help determine which courses you've already completed and what remains.
Upper-Division General Education
Students must complete applicable upper-division General Education requirements.
The original sample plan specifies at least three upper-division GE courses covering two different GE areas.
Some approved courses may satisfy both major and General Education requirements.
Major Requirements
Students must complete the required Liberal Studies coursework and any additional approved courses needed to fulfill the major.
Depending on your academic record, additional Arts and Humanities or Behavioral Science coursework may be necessary.
Semester Unit Planning
The original plan allows students to register for up to 16 units per semester to meet the suggested academic schedule.
Because course loads can affect work, family responsibilities, and available study time, students should discuss their plans with an academic advisor before registering.
