Elementary Teacher Preparation

The Hutchins Liberal Studies elementary teacher preparation major concentrations combine the breadth of a Liberal Studies degree with the specific content knowledge needed to become an elementary school teacher. Coursework is carefully planned to meet California Commission on Teaching Credentialing-mandated content standards for pre-service elementary teachers. Our major concentrations provide excellent preparation for the CSET exam and the opportunity to obtain a CSET Multiple Subjects Exam waiver, which is required for admission to an elementary teacher credential program. The philosophy of the Hutchins Liberal Studies program is to provide a course array that offers opportunities for a well-educated person to confront intellectual issues that transcend individual disciplines.

By participating in a specially-designed sequence including fieldwork and seminar classes, Hutchins Liberal Studies teacher preparation majors will gain highly developed verbal and written communication skills, and will understand each subject of the elementary school curriculum with considerable breadth and depth. This approach is further enhanced by meaningful professional experiences in the elementary classroom.
